In this business tv show,Stefan Tornquist, Research Director at Marketing Sherpa, talks about how being connected to one or more social networks could help you to win big: “[Another] interesting thing is this land rush in social networking. I think recently I read that over 200000 networks have started in the last year so this is really starting to mimic the blogging explosion of several years ago and you know I don’t know quite yet if its going to be, I know that its not going to have been worth it for most of those social network creators right because like blogs there are simply too many blog streams, there are too many social networks to, not to join but to be an active member of so like blogs I think most of these are going to go fallow but that doesn’t mean that there’s not an opportunity here because some of them aren’t and I think the currency in, currency in a few years online will be engagement, it already is in many respects and we’re trying to do a better job of measuring what engagement is and if you think about how people engage with social networks there’s an awful lot of, there’s an awful lot of equity built up between the social network and the user. So if you’re the kind of company that can do a good job developing a small social network for your customers and one that really provides value, it cant simply be become a member of our social network and we’ll let you know when there’s a new product available and its not going to work all that well but if …

I am a big fan of facebook…very easy to use. Myspace isn’t really something I know alot about. What exactly are the features of Myspace? Is it like youtube?

I agree with you businesstvgeorge on the fact that facebook is very user freindly. Apart from that, one does not really get spam mails or weirdos giving funny comments in facebook.

I agree expertsjax !, myspace is still really good for music and bands, and I think thats the way it will head. The main reason is facebook, so easy to use, don’t know anyone who uses myspace to actually social network. Still if myspace was a country it would have the same population as Argentina. So not dead yet!

Hmmm be keen to hear why you think MySpace is going down?? I used it when I was younger but since canceled my account after months of not even accessing it.. too much spam and too many young kids with crap messages! Maybe I just didn’t know how to use it as well as facebook!

I’m with you businessexpertandre, a lot more thought is going to have to go into this and the most successful are going to be those who concentrate on niche interests rather than a one size fits all approach.

200k new networks!!!. The big boys are well established and tragically, networks are going to be more successful if they focus on specific niche interests than general types.

He’s right about the need for the complexity and being compelling – i can’t remember how many networks i’ve signed onto in recent years, dozens, but i’ve only stuck with a fraction of them. yeah – the currency of engagement!

Businesses have started up and failed forever. It’s just that you can track them online so much more now.

200K networks in a year! wow! This is like blogging 2.0
And as he says, most networks will fail so you really need to have something that really gets people involved…
