How To Use Forums To Promote Your Business Online

Because of the anonymous nature of the internet people are generally more skeptical when it comes to doing business online.  Owing partly to famous internet scams sensationalized by the media and to bad personal experiences online, people are less likely to trust a party whom they’ve never met in person.

As an online marketer, you face the challenge of building trust and loyalty without the benefit of a physical handshake, a face-to-face meeting, or even a smile. To this end online forums can provide an excellent way to build meaningful relationships with people and attract new customers.  

By joining a forum in your area of expertise, you gain access to a community that shares your interests as well as a pool of potential customers. There are countless forums dealing with just about any topic imaginable.  The vast majority of forums do not charge you a fee to register or post messages.  Many allow you to include with your posts self-promotional “signatures” that you can use to promote your business and link to your website.

A good way to locate a forum relevant to your line of business is to do a keyword search using one of the major search engines.  Why a major search engine?  A Google search for “website marketing forum,” for example, will not only return dozens of relevant forums on website marketing, but will also give you an indication of how highly they are regarded by the search engine giant, as gauged by how high they rank for that key phrase.  Forums that rank higher on the search engine result pages (SERPs) are the ones of which you’ll want to become a member.

Forums allow you to share knowledge and gain reputation as an expert in your field.  Offering concrete advices that are immediately useful to other people is an especially effective marketing technique. Once you’ve gained credibility in your field, you will be sought after for your professional expertise without your having to promote yourself.

Participating in forums is also an excellent way to humanize yourself and your business.  When people deal with you, they’ll know that they’re dealing with a real person, not a nameless, faceless business entity.  By staking your reputation online, you demonstrate that you are willing to accept some degree of accountability for your actions.

If you’re a generally honest and agreeable person in the real life, there is no reason to hide behind a company name when conducting business online. The personal qualities that make you likable in the real world will also make you likable in cyberspace.  Indeed, establishing meaningful relationships online is a lot like making friends in the real world. After all, on the other side of the terminal is a real person with real emotions just like you.

Another key to meaningful online relationships is to create an atmosphere of openness and transparency.  Although you normally use a nickname to start and respond to posts in public forums, you should use your real name in private correspondences. It is good practice to begin your messages with a salutation, addressing them by their real name whenever possible. A little courtesy can go a long way in building loyalty and trust.  

Apart from selling your personal qualities, you must have something of value to offer to people– and at prices that are fair to everyone! On a venue where your personal reputation is not at stake, you can price a widget for any amount you want and hope someone will come along and buy it.  When you do business on forums, however, you must be extra value-conscious when pricing your product or service. If you overprice your widget, you risk receiving flames from other members that could harm your reputation. This is why it’s so important to research what other members are charging for a similar widget and to price yours competitively.  Often you’ll end up charging lower prices to members of your forum than to other customers with whom you have not developed as close a relationship for the same widget.

Building positive relationships is about making people feel important. Just as you want to feel good for having sold your product or service, people want to feel good for having bought it. This is why it is so important to promptly answer their questions and attend to their concerns. Listen to their inputs and incorporate their ideas into your business practices.  This is how you make your customers a part of your team.  It’s not a stretch to speak of your customer as a member of your team. When you really think about it, no business can exist without its customers.  Teamwork is not limited to interacting with other members of your company.  It also takes teamwork to build a constructive, mutually beneficial relationship between you and your customers.

The ABC’s Of Leadership

A recent new study by the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and U.S. News & World Report (September 2006) reports that 70% of folks in the U.S believe there is a leadership crisis in America. So do I!

If you had ‘Googled’ the word ‘leadership as I did in January 2007 when preparing to write my first book you would have gotten 163 million references on the Internet. If you had ‘Googled’ ‘fol¬lowership’ at that same time you got 192,000… a little over one-tenth of the sites for leadership. We have a fascination for leader¬ship and how it is to be executed. We used to believe that leaders were born not made. In recent decades we have come to know differently. The fact is that because leaders are at the pinnacle of organizations they are expected to somehow magically (and single-handedly) lead their organizations to greatness.

There have been almost innumerable studies and research on what makes leaders successful. As a senior level HR executive for many years I have personally drawn upon this vast array of research to help coach and counsel lots of leaders in corporations on how to improve their game. What I learned over the years is that, like everything in life, the answers can often be complex but the solutions can be quite simple if the individual is willing to learn more about themselves, their colleagues and the organiza¬tions they serve.

A very good friend of mine, Ken Hampton, a Senior Vice President with the Waco Chamber of Commerce has a great perspective about leader-ship:

“A great leader is one that sees himself as a steward of the resources and lives that he’s been tasked with achieving the defined business results.

My idea of leadership is emphasizing collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. The leader is a servant first, making conscious decisions to lead because he wants to serve the enterprise and individuals rather than be absorbed in driving his own need for power.

A great leader enhances the growth of individuals in the organization to increase teamwork and personal involvement to drive effective business results.

To be a great leader you have to be a great follower. Even more importantly, a great leader sees himself as the same as those he leads. No one is more important than the other, they just have different roles.

Leadership employs vision, principles, and commitment to drive great behavior, teamwork, results and experiences for those of which he’s been privileged to serve under his leadership.”

A New York Times study in 2001 revealed 25% of employees reported being driven to tears in the workplace. 50% of workers are calling their place of work a place of “verbal abuse” and “yell¬ing”. 30% of workers believe they are regularly given unrealistic deadlines and half of them report that they have to work 12 hour days to get the work done.

The Harvard Business Review estimates that ‘presenteeism’ (workers who come to work but aren’t productive at all) costs in America to be at $150 billion annually. The Gallup Organiza¬tion studies say that as much as 30% of the average workforce is “actively disengaged”!

My take on what this means is just this…if an employee is actively disengaged they are not only not working for you, they are deliberately working against the goals and ob¬jectives of your organization!

It has also been my experience that employees will undermine the organization (if only in an inno¬cent way) until leadership address the dysfunction. My question is what are organizational leaders doing about this? Do they even know about it? Overwhelming stats like these are a clear call for better leadership.

My personal experience in working for some of the finest or¬ganizations in the world is that there is no magic bullet that will instantly work for everyone. In fact, every leader is different, and the skills and competencies each needs to work on will be dif¬ferent.

There is an array of factors that spell success for organi¬zations and their leaders. However, almost all of the skills and competencies for great leadership can usually be agreed upon.

I challenge you to ask yourself questions… lots and lots of questions about your experiences with leadership, your orga¬nization’s effectiveness in light of your leadership, and what new level of performance can be achieved if you focused on it for just a moment. I hope you will find those questions provocative and insightful. Use those moments to help develop a plan of action to succeed as a leader.

Well, it’s official. This was one of the worst summers for teens who wanted a job. According to the Labor Market the teen unemployment rate was 25.9% the highest since the World War II. Yes, our economy is suffering, and so many groups of people are looking for work. The teens are competing with retirees (remember they lost their savings), displaced workers, college graduates, transitional workers and the rising of the minimum wage. Obviously teens will suffer the most because of lack of skills or experience. But there is something a teen can do. They can enhance their skills.

 

Employers are looking for Professionalism, Work Ethics, Oral and Written Communications, Teamwork, Collaborations, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Here’s how a teen can begin to put in place a way to honing these skills.

 

1. Professionalism- Business Etiquette and Protocol, Dressing for Business

Having great manners goes a long way in business. If you know what fork or spoon to use at a business dinner or if you know not adding emoticons at the end of an email address to the Vice President, you are already one step ahead of the game. Your wardrobe can make or break the initial interview, so read up on what to wear to an interview.

 

2. Oral-Public Speaking

Talking in front of a live audience is something everyone will get to experience at least once in their life time, whether a church function, wedding, family reunion, job, Home Association Meeting, Organization, etc. Practice with your family and friends with 2 to 3 minute little speeches and then let them critique how well or how bad you were. Listen to some great speeches and see why they were great.

 

3. Problem Solving-Leadership

Do you know every employer would love to hire a person who has a take charge mentality without stepping on anyone toes of authority? Managers love to see employers tackled a problem without constantly asking them what to do. Read about famous leaders and books on leadership.

 

4. Teamwork-Diversity-Relationship

You must understand how important it is to get along with co-workers, vendors and clients. You must embrace and welcome differences in the workplace. If you have a problem with other people religion, color, creed then chances of you staying on at a job will great decrease.

Begin to volunteer at your local charities, schools and church. Employers want to see how you feel about other people; they want to know they are not hiring someone that only thinks about themselves. There are so many places that need your help. You should never have a problem finding a place to volunteer. Also the work you do volunteering counts as solid work experience!

 

6. Collaboration-Time Management-Multi-tasking

Can you do several things at one time? Can you talk on the phone, while typing? A person with great time management skills makes a manager very happy. They understand that deadline driven work will be taken care of and they do not have that feeling of checking up because they know you have everything under control. What a great feeling! You can practice your time management skills at home. Can you do the laundry, cook and dust all at the same time?

 

7. Customer Service Skills

Customer service skills are simply techniques on how you treat others in a business environment. Every job entails having excellent customer service. Answering the phone in a place of business is usually the first impression a potential customer hears. If you answer the phone with a smile (although they can not see it but it makes a difference) pick up after two rings, say the name of the company and how you can help shows a favorably side of the company.

 

8. Salesmanship

Every business is in business to make money. You can not make money without a transaction. You need to know how to close the deal. If you can close the deal, or know how to convince a client, customer or vendor that whatever you have is the best, brightest, longest, shortest, fastest, slowest, etc and they buy the product or service you are a  salesman. When you convince your best friend to go to the movies with you on a school night you are a salesman!
